The Art of Nang Talung in Thailand

The Nang Talung Museum in Nakhon si Thammarat Province, Thailand tracks the history and development of shadow puppet play over 200 years with examples of puppets, scenery and musical instruments from different periods including examples from India, China, Indonesia, Malasyia and Turkey.

Mr Suchart Subsin, 1938- has devoted his life to the crafting of puppets and to the performance of Nang Talung. Having constructed the museum he is now committed to educating and entertaining visitors in the art of shadow puppet play.

Mr Wathi, Mr Subsin's son and other family members have carried on the tradition of inticately carving puppets from dried cow hide with small hand instruments then painting them with black, green, red and yellow pigments. A process that can take months.
